Baseball America – Tony Cingrani

Saying Cingrani has been dominant in his minor league career thus far would be an understatement. The six feet four inch lefty was promoted from Single-A Bakersfield after putting up video game numbers including a 5-1 record, a 1.11 era, and 71 strikeouts in just 10 starts. Cingrani would continue his success at Double-A Pensacola going 5-3, a 2.12 era, and 101 strikeouts in fifteen starts. He would finish the year in the minors with 10 wins, 172 strikeouts, and almost 150 innings of work. Cingrani has a strong fastball that will range from the low 90’s to 96 miles per hour. Cingrani throws a changeup and slider to throw off hitters from his fastball. His deceptive motion hides the ball and his grip making it harder for hitters to pick up.

Cingrani’s success definitely didn’t go unnoticed as he received a well deserved call up in September to aid the Cincinnati Reds and their bullpen. He was able to get 5 innings of work in at the big league level while only giving up 1 run. The lefty showed he was ready for the show because of his good command and dominating strikeout pitches. His ability to strikeout more batters than innings pitched transferred to the MLB with 9 strikeouts in his 5 innings of relief.

Cingrani looks to be one of the best 3rd round picks in the deep 2011 MLB Draft. The Cincinnati Reds are looking at one of the best pitchers in the minor leagues of 2012. They also could be looking at an ace for the years to come.
